Field Trip Permission Slip
Welcome to 1st grade at Highline Academy! We're so glad you're here and we can't wait to spend the year learning with you!
Going home with your student today is a field trip permission slip form! In case, it gets lost in transit, you will also receive an email with a printable version, and it will be posted here as well. The field trip will be on April 15th, to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science! If you would like to chaperon, please return the slip with $5. Your student's cost of the trip is covered by the school's activity fee, which was paid at the beginning of the year. If you're not sure if you paid the fee, you can check with the front office!

It is with a broken heart, that we must inform you of the passing of our wonderful music teacher, Susan Tobias, after a fierce and brave battle with cancer. A letter from the principal with information on grief counseling is listed below. We will return to school on Friday, with heavy hearts and are here to help families and students alike, as we process the loss of a staple and inspiration to our community. Please reach out to us if you need anything at all.
Best, First Grade Team Community Letter Tips for Talking about Death Dear 1st Grade Families,
As we are fast approaching a long weekend, we wanted to clarify a few things. First of all, we do not have a Valentine's Day party, nor do we exchange cards at Highline. Please refrain from buying or sending cards to school, as they will be sent home. All students cannot afford to participate, so Highline has made it a rule! In Thursday Folders tomorrow you will get a Science Fair Form. This is purely for fun, and something you would take on with your student to be completed at home. Should you choose to participate in the Science Fair Project the due date for completion is the week after Spring Break. At that time, the 1st grade teachers will judge the project and assign 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. There is a Community Science Fair night on April 8th. Please be sure that your student is doing the majority of the work involved, and you are only helping them complete the project! If you are interested, fill out the form and return it to school by February 26th with your project details! With the help of the middle school science teacher, Mr. Kosten, Mrs. Montoya will approve, or suggest revision of project and return it to your student so you can begin your experiments or research! Forward any additional questions to Mrs. Montoya. Look for Parent Teacher Conference letters in the next week! Don't forget, no school on Monday or Tuesday! The First Grade Team Hello families!
As we dive into the second half of the school year, things are moving at a whirlwind speed! We wanted to share a couple of updates with you as we move right along: There are some wonderful websites that are available for both math and literacy that have great (fun!) games for your students to practice what they're learning in school. If you head to spellingcity.com/Highline1stgrade/ students can find ways to practice their words; the cat and mouse game is a big hit! We are in the process of uploading class lists, but there are many games to play even if you can't find your spelling list. Students should sign in with same password and username they use for the AR program. (password: first initial first name, first four letters of last name, username: abc) In math, there is an amazing website called matific.com. This site is also free to sign up for! When you go to matific.com, students can use their AR login to access the lessons; these are games that we've picked that relate to what we're learning in class. The games are also categorized similarly to how Eureka is laid out and should line up well with what your student is studying. On another note, we'd like to ask that you please make sure your students are not bringing in toys to school. Mornings are understandably hectic, but we're noticing a large increase in the number of toys found in desks and being played with, and it's a huge distraction. Students should be aware that they're not to bring toys to school, and understand that if the same toy is taken away and brought back multiple times, then a parent/guardian will need to pick it up. Unfortunately, this includes any books that may have stickers in them, as the kids pass them out and again, get very distracted. Upcoming dates and events: 2-15-16 President's Day (no school) 2-16-16 Teacher Work Day (no school) 3-4-16 Parent Teacher Conferences (no school) More information to come! 3-28-16 to 4-3-16 Spring Break (no school) Whew! I apologize for the overload of information! We're hoping some of these new sites will keep kids engaged as we power through the school year. All of this information will also be on the website. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate! Best, First Grade Team Hooray! More updates!
Your student should have come home today with a Colorado Gives Day sticker! Because stickers can easily unstick... here is the poster with all of them information. As a school, we can not express enough how grateful we are for all of your help and support! The elementary school open house will be on Tuesday, December 9th, starting at 6pm, if you would like to join us for school wide information and a question and answer session. Also, permission slips should have been returned for the winter concert. Our fabulous kiddos will be performing on December 10th, at 6PM. They will need to be there by 5:35 at the latest and can wear their school uniform or dress clothes. On a logistics note, there seems to be a minor mistake on our school calendar that is hopefully being remedied. Previously, the calendar said that we do not have school on Friday, December 18th, BUT WE DO! We will be teaching right up until the last day so please try and ensure that your child is with us. If you have any questions at all, please don't hesitate to ask! Thanks for all you do! First Grade Team Colorado Gives Day! Hello wonderful first grade families!
We are quickly approaching Thanksgiving break, and right behind it will be our Holiday break! A lot of exciting things are happening in the mean time that we want to let you know about. The Principal's Edition newsletter for this month has just been published. It has a lot of great information for you to look over! On November 24, Tuesday, will be our gratitude celebration, also known as pie day! A flyer with additional information is posted below and will be under the upcoming events tab. Coming up in December will be our Highline Holiday Adopt a Family! A flyer with more information about the event is also posted below. Both flyers will be sent home in Thursday folders if you would like a hard copy for the fridge :) After Thanksgiving break, students will have their second round of iReady testing, on December 10th and 11th. While we won't be sending any work home to be completed over the break, please make sure your students are reading as much as possible and even working on their math facts, so that they're sharp and ready to take their math and literacy assessments! Last, but certainly not least, our wonderful Mrs. Gaister is officially on maternity leave with the arrival of a happy and healthy baby girl, on Wednesday (11/18). We are so excited about the latest addition to her family! We are also excited to welcome Taylor Daum into our classroom to serve as a TA in Mrs. Gaister's absence. Taylor is coming to us with experience in another first grade classroom, in Austin, Texas, and we're really looking forward to working with her. As always, please reach out with any questions or concerns. Thank you for all of your support! Best, FIrst Grade Team Principal's Newsletter Pie Day! Adopt-a-Family Hi all!
You should be receiving an flyer and an email about the Fall Dress Down Day that will be occurring next week. In case it gets "lost in transit", here's a link to the flyer. Best, First Grade Team Fall Dress Down Flyer Happy Monday everyone!
Just as a reminder, homework packets and spelling words have been uploaded. You might notice that the packets are a little larger this week, but students have extra time to complete everything, since there's no school on Monday(10/19) or Tuesday(10/20) for fall break! Our inbox is always open if you have questions! First Grade Team Hello Parents!
At some point this week, your student should be bringing home a book from our school library! It will either be in their book baggie, if you elected to have one, or in their backpack (in which case you are only responsible to the library for the loss/damage of a book). Inside of your student's book "should" be a green sheet with some helpful information from our wonderful librarian, Ms. DeWane. In case that green sheet doesn't make it home, the link is here! Library Book Information Happy Reading! First Grade Team Our fabulous principal has published a wonderful newsletter for September, that we'd like to share with you!
The Principal Edition Also, book baggie contracts should be coming home in Thursday folders, but here is an additional link, should they get lost in transit. It will also be posted under the school forms tab! Book Baggie Contract |
