Due to a strong student interest in sharing stories and belongings, both classes will be hosting show-and-tell during Closing Circle each Friday afternoon. This means that students are allowed to bring in ONE item from home on Fridays ONLY. The item should stay in a student's backpack until Closing Circle. If he or she takes out the item during the day, he or she will be reminded once to place it back inside a backpack. If more reminders are needed, the item will be collected by the teacher. Show-and-tell items make include toys, books, homemade creations, photos, souvenirs, art, etc. Electronics and anything valuable is discouraged. "Items" may even include verbally sharing a story or doing a short performance. We can't wait to learn about each other even more!
Believe it or not, our next round of iReady testing is coming up! All first graders will take their ELA iReady test on Thursday, September 7th during their Reach for Reading class. Students will also take the math iReady test on Monday, September 11th during their math block. Please encourage your children to take it seriously and try their best. It is also helpful to ensure that kids get plenty of rest and a healthy breakfast before testing. Thank you for your support. We're looking forward to seeing the growth of each student!
Remember there is no school on September 4th. Enjoy the long weekend!

Saturday, May 21st is our next garden work day and a lot of things will be happening! We will be.... 1. Dedicating the garden to Susan's memory with a small ceremony and plaque 2. Installing an outdoor musical instrument *see more details below* 3. Having composting classes for any to attend and learn about how to compost in their own home and how it will look at school 4. Any other clean-up work that needs to be done (there is quite a bit) BUT, we need a favor from you! We are trying to raise money for an outdoor musical instrument for the garden! We are asking for any help you can offer, in the form of donations or volunteering and celebrating with us on May 21st. Cash or check donations can be turned into the front office. This is our last opportunity for volunteering and celebrating the garden for this year. Please let us know if you have any questions! Best, First Grade Team PS. There will be bagels and snacks... Wednesday (5/11) will be a dress down day for students that have turned in their Parent Survey. You can mail it in or send it with your child to be sent to the office. It's a wonderful way for the school to collect data about how to improve and it's a nice treat for your student, so please make sure you submit it!
As with all dress down days, the outfits need to appropriate for school and the weather, along with not being distracting to other students. We will also be sending out new field trip forms with correct dates. We will be having a field trip May 23rd to the museum, and May 31st to the zoo. We are not able to contract a bus for the field trip to the zoo, so we will need parent drivers! Also, please let us know whether or not you'd like to chaperon. Below, is a link to additional copies of the field trip form The last month of school is packed with exciting activities and trips and will go by in a whirlwind.
